Australia's history with East Timor isn’t pretty but it must be told truthfully

Image
Suggestions that the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is impeding or trying to censor an official history of Australia’s East Timor peacekeeping mission are disturbing but unsurprising. They’re disturbing because good history must have as bedrock an independence from national reputation-shaping and political interference. The line between that and propaganda is fine. But they are not a surprise because the department, its prominent Liberal ministers – not least Alexander Downer – and successive conservative governments have all spun like blazing Catherine wheels around the facts about Australian diplomatic sycophancy towards Indonesia over the country now known as Timor-Leste before, during and after the 1999 deployment. From the Archives, 1999: Australia says no to a republic

Image
The Queen will remain Australia's head of state after voters decisively rejected the republican system on offer in yesterday's referendum. The referendum question was set to fail on both critical counts: it has no chance to win a national majority, and could fail in every state. The proposed preamble was also decisively rejected. The head of Australians for a Constitutional Monarchy, Mrs Kerry Jones, broke out the champagne at 8.07pm, effectively declaring victory. Vietnamese man has visa cancelled for carrying four kilograms of pork

Image
A second traveller into Australia has had his visa cancelled over African swine fever concerns. A 60-year-old Vietnamese man, who arrived into Sydney with close to four kilograms of pork-filled mooncakes stowed in his luggage, was sent home for failing to declare the food, Agriculture Minister Bridget McKenzie said. It follows the deportation of a Vietnamese woman last month, who also failed to declare pork products. "Travellers are banned from bringing most pork products from African swine fever countries into Australia, full stop," Ms McKenzie said. "It's one of the heightened measures our Government put in place to keep the devastating disease out of Australia and to protect our 2700 pork producers. Australia Needs a Green New Deal

Image
Last Monday, frontbenchers from the Australian Labor Party (ALP) tabled a motion in the lower house calling on Parliament to declare a climate emergency. Only five Labor MPs showed up to defend their motion. Astoundingly low-energy though this effort was, it was hardly surprising: the party’s climate policy consists mainly of vague rhetoric, while in practice it continues to approve coal projects across the country. In Queensland, the Labor government under Annastacia Palaszczuk has opted to fast-track the Adani coal mine, opening up the Galilee Basin to mining development that promises to increase global carbon emissions by a stunning 10 percent. The ostensibly left-leaning, climate-friendly Victorian Labor government under Daniel Andrews is expanding drilling activities offshore in the Otway Basin. The existent ban on onshore fracking and drilling will expire altogether next year, and there is no word of extending it. Read more:  https://www.jacobinmag.com/2019/11/australia-gre

Bulls move into dominant position over Warriors

Image
Western Australia are battling to avoid defeat against Queensland after Shaun Marsh fell cheaply amid a top-order collapse in their Sheffield Shield clash at the Gabba. At stumps on day three, the visitors were 4-39 in their second innings, still 40 runs behind the hosts after ex-Test batsman Marsh fell for eight. The stage had been set for Marsh to again make selectors sit up and take notice after his first innings heroics of 77. However, young gun Xavier Bartlett (2-13) had other ideas, snaring Marsh caught behind just ahead of stumps to put the hosts in the box seat..
